Define the work before choosing a robot

A practical way to turn a business problem into requirements that robot manufacturers and integrators can assess.

A robot model is not a project requirement

A useful robotics brief begins with the work: the current process, the objects involved, the people nearby, the operating environment and the result the business needs. Selecting a machine before those facts are known usually moves uncertainty into the integration phase, where it becomes more expensive.

Robot suppliers use different language, but their application guidance repeatedly asks for the same fundamentals: reach, load, centre of mass, cycle time, layout, environmental limits, human tasks and system interfaces. RobotAtom turns those fundamentals into one neutral project record.

The twelve questions that establish a useful first brief

  • What work needs to be completed, and how is it done today?
  • What objects, materials, machines or areas are involved?
  • What measurable result would make the project worthwhile?
  • How often and how quickly must the work be completed?
  • Where will the robot work, and what access restrictions exist?
  • Who will be nearby, operate it, clean it or recover it?
  • What hazards, sector rules and internal approvals apply?
  • Which tools, sensors and existing systems must connect?
  • What should happen when the normal process fails?
  • How will the customer test and accept the result?
  • What delivery date and commercial model are practical?
  • Which answers are measured, estimated or still unknown?

Completeness is not safety approval

A structured brief can be complete enough to compare options without being ready for deployment. Industrial robot safety standards separate the robot itself from the integrated application, and task-based risk assessment still requires qualified people who understand the actual site.
